What is 'Lifestyle Photography'?

Lifestyle photography aims to portray real-life situations in the most visually pleasing way possible. To maintain realism whilst maximising the beauty of the images I capture, I have become proficient at using the best available natural light (there is really nothing comparable in terms of warmth, softness and realism).

I will pose and position you for portraiture and perhaps manipulate the environment to a small extent to create the best images possible, but I do not shoot in a studio, I do not use a blinding array of artificial lights, and I avoid using flash photography unless absolutely necessary.

This is my favourite approach to photographing Weddings, as the combination of reportage, photojournalism and natural light portraiture becomes a compelling and emotional story of your day.

Do you do group shots as well?

Formal group photos are an important part of the day and I will take as few or as many as you like, but please bear in mind that the group photography can be a very boring part of the day for you and your guests, and detracts from the time that I can spend photographing the day's most important people - the bride and groom.

Most couples are pleased with my suggestion of having just a few close family groups as well as one larger shot of all your guests.

Do you shoot film or digital?

For my professional work I shoot entirely digitally.

How do we choose a Wedding photographer?

You will want to remember your Wedding day for the rest of your life, and photographs are perhaps the best way of doing this - so choosing the right photographer is an important decision. I've put together some useful tips for choosing a photographer that I hope will help guide you, whoever you end up inviting to photograph you.

  • Start looking for a photographer early as we tend to get booked up very quickly (especially in the Summer months).
  • Have a good browse through their portfolio and make sure you like a lot of what they are creating.
  • Check that their prices or packages are within your budget.
  • Don't be dazzled by one really glitzy, stand-out image: check for the consistency of beautiful images across a variety of situations - outdoors and indoors, in bright warm sunlight, or in the challenging dimness of a small church.
  • Try and meet the photographer in person, as you will be in a much better position to judge whether their personality is right for you. They're going to be spending quite a bit of time with you - taking great photos is only part of the job! Are they friendly but professional? Do they make you feel comfortable?

Okay, then, why should we choose you?

If my images speak to you and you want that style; if you want someone who makes your photography easy and fun but who is unobtrusive - someone who knows when to take charge and when to disappear into the background; if you want someone who considers it an honour and a privilege to be your photographer and someone who will present you with a collection of beautiful, timeless images -  then we would probably make great photographs together.

What is an engagement shoot?

All my Weddings include a complimentary engagement shoot. This will last between 1-2 hours and will be a great opportunity to get to know one another in the roles we'll be playing on the big day. If you're camera shy this is also a chance for you to get used to being the centre of attention so that, come your Wedding day, you are relaxed and confident around me.

The idea is that you end up with a collection of beautiful images which capture who you are, long before you walk down the aisle. They are great to share with friends on Facebook; some people like to have them printed on save the date cards or invitations; others just like some nice, natural shots together to have on a wall or mantelpiece.

They are a lot of fun, and can take place anywhere you like. Somewhere with special significance perhaps - a favourite bit of parkland or stretch of countryside.

Are you insured?

Yes, I have full public liability and professional indemnity insurance.

Do you back your photos up?

Absolutely! Backing up is the first action I will take after our shoot. Before any editing or processing takes place the images are copied to  external storage drives and to DVD.

How many images will I receive?

This depends on what we'll be doing together. For Weddings, I give 250 as a minimum but the final image count varies greatly and there is no maximum limit. The Engagement shoot we will have before your Wedding will usually result in around 15-20 photographs - great to share on Facebook, or have printed on invitations.

Other Special Occasions have individual needs. Parties, Christenings and other events all require different approaches and there are a differing number of important moments to capture. It's best to get in touch so that we can talk over your requirements.

For Portraits the image count could be anywhere between 10 and 50 photographs depending on what we are trying to achieve.

Commercial shoots vary greatly depending on who/what we are shooting, and how many of them there are. I've had shoots which have resulted in 25 photos and shoots which have resulted in 125! Because of this it's best to get in touch with me so we can discuss how I can help you out.

How soon after the shoot can I expect my pictures?

I will often email you a few low-res 'sneak previews' within 48 hours of the shoot. Final images from a Wedding may take 4-6 weeks to be fully finished, due to the significant amount of work involved in editing and retouching a large number of photographs. Images from a portrait or commercial session are typically quicker, taking on average 1-2 weeks.

Do you carry out retouching?

I do retouch images where necessary. I have a great deal of experience with digital retouching, which allows me to maintain my own artistic vision rather than sending files off to a retouch company. I try and keep this kind of editing to a minimum and I have a strict rule about cosmetic retouching - if it is something that wouldn't be there in a couple of weeks, then it's okay to take it away. Anything that is a part of who you are will never be altered.

Where are you based?

I predominantly work around Kent, Sussex, Surrey and the South East, frequently covering Tonbridge, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Maidstone and surrounding areas. I'm also comfortable travelling up to London, down to Brighton and everywhere in between.

I am also available further afield in the UK and for Destination Weddings - just get in touch with me for details.

Does travel cost extra?

I charge a very reasonable travel rate for shoots over a certain distance from the South East. I will always discuss this with you before booking and make sure you have a complete breakdown of any costs.

Destination Weddings are at my standard Wedding price, plus expenses for flights and accommodation, etc.

What if it rains/snows/hails?

No need to worry! I'm always ready to deal with this wonderful Country's unpredictable elements, and have a lot of experience creating great images whatever the weather.

What happens if you are ill?

If I am ill, I will still be there to take your photographs. If somehow I am hospitalised or otherwise immobilised through illness or injury, then I will send a talented photographer of my own choice - who I trust implicitly - to take your photos in my place.

How do I book you?

Contact me to arrange a meet up, perhaps over a cup of coffee or in your home, or we can have a consultation over the telephone if you are further away. Meeting isn't essential for a booking but when it comes to Weddings I would always advise trying to get to know your photographer a little better before you settle on him or her.

After you've decided to go ahead I ask for a non-refundable booking fee of £150 and a signed booking form - with the remaining balance due four weeks before the date of the Wedding. Dates are filled on a first come, first served basis so once I am booked, I am booked. Prime dates are likely to be booked up to a year in advance so I always recommend finding a photographer as early as possible.

What if my question isn't here?

If you have something you want to ask that hasn't been addressed here, then please drop me a line via any of the details on my contact page!
